DON'T DRINK THE WATER

She Loves Me
February 3 - 19, 2012
Written by Woody Allen
Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

Directed by Reva Kaufman

We kick off our 30th season with a special anniversary reprise of Don’t Drink the Water, the very first show Cottage Theatre produced in 1982 under a parachute on the lawn of the Village Green Resort. This laugh-out-loud 1966 farce was Woody Allen’s first professionally-produced play and a solid hit on Broadway. The action takes place in an American Embassy in an unnamed European country behind the Iron Curtain. The Ambassador has just been called away. He leaves his inept son in charge, a son whose previous exploits have gotten him expelled from a dozen countries and the continent of Africa. Almost immediately, the Embassy is thrust into crisis when some bumbling American tourists rush in seeking refuge. Apparently they had been caught taking pictures in a restricted area. The building is soon surrounded by communist police who are clamoring for the tourists they believe to be spies – and the madcap hilarity begins.
