RABBIT HOLE
Artemisia is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service. www.concordtheatricals.com
Artemisia was commissioned and originally produced by Forward Theatre Company in Madison, WI. Directed by Maggie Hadley Artemisia Gentileschi was the most celebrated female painter of the 17th century, yet her name was almost forgotten. Attacked at seventeen, publicly shamed and tortured to prove her truth, Gentileschi nevertheless fought for the freedom to make art on her own terms. Renowned for painting women with realistic detail, her most famous works include Susanna and the Elders and Judith and her Maidservant. Always contending with her father, consumed with passion for her lover, and fiercely devoted to her children, she was a modern woman before her time. Lauren Gunderson’s Artemisia is a play of humor and warmth that honors the courage and artistry of a woman who attacked the glass ceiling with every brush stroke.
