Fiddler on the Roof opens at Cottage Theatre on April 4

Cottage Grove, OR — Opening April 4 at Cottage Theatre is the Tony award-winning musical Fiddler on the Roof. Based on Sholem Aleichem stories by Arnold Perl, with book by Joseph Stein, music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, Fiddler on the Roof ran for over 3,000 performances on Broadway between 1964 and 1972. The show has enjoyed multiple Broadway revivals, most recently in 2004. Fiddler on the Roof is the second of six productions in Cottage Theatre's 2014 season, which continues through December.

The story of the musical is familiar to most people. In 1905, in the little village of Anatevka, a poor dairyman named Tevye tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, Fiddler on the Roof has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. With memorable songs like “If I Were a Rich Man,” “Matchmaker,” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” Fiddler on the Roof has become a beloved musical tradition for generations of theatre-goers.

Cottage Theatre's production of Fiddler on the Roof is directed by Peg Major, with musical direction by Larry Kenton. The original Jerome Robbins choreography will be reproduced for this production by choreographer Pamela Lehan-Siegel. Set design is by Alan Beck, lighting design is by Amanda Ferguson, and costume design is by Rhonda Turnquist.

Paul von Rotz stars in the iconic role of Tevye. Other featured actors include Sue Schroeder-White as his wife Golde; Donia Hovet, Katie Peters, Kyra Siegel, Sarah Sisson, and Kenady Conforth as the couple's five daughters; and Isaac Hovet, Kory Weimer, and Ethan Stokes as suitors to the eldest daughters. Pamela Lehan-Siegel will portray Yente the matchmaker. In other featured roles are David Work, Bob Ewing, Bil Morrill, Eric Hope, Craig Stokes, Steve Knight, Annie Pusey, Rebekah Hope, Ken Major, and CJ Cramer. Steve Kilston will be the Fiddler, and a large chorus of villagers will complete the cast of 45.

Fiddler on the Roof runs for four weekends at Cottage Theatre from April 4 - 27, 2014. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 pm and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm. There will be one added Thursday performance on April 24 at 8:00 pm. There will not be a performance on Easter Sunday, April 20.

Tickets are available online at www.cottagetheatre.org, by phone at (541) 942-8001, or in person at the Cottage Theatre Box Office, 700 Village Drive, Cottage Grove. Tickets are $23 for adults and $19 for youth (ages 6 to 18). Box Office hours are Wednesday through Friday, 10 am to 2 pm, and one hour before performances.
