Cottage Theatre opens The Importance of Being Earnest on June 9

Cottage Grove, OR -- Cottage Theatre continues its 35th season in June with The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde, a "trivial comedy for serious people." Wilde's most popular play premiered February 14, 1895 and has been performed regularly around the globe for more than a century. Cottage Theatre's production of The Importance of Being Earnest will run for three weekends from June 9 through June 25.

This enduringly popular Victorian farce is a delight from the first cucumber sandwich to the last muffin. Jack Worthing, a carefree young gentleman, has invented a fictitious brother “Ernest,” whose wicked ways provide a regular excuse for Jack to leave his country home and visit London, where he stays with his friend and confidant Algernon Moncrieff. Algernon has a cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax, with whom Jack is deeply in love. During his London sojourns, Jack, using his pseudonym, wins Gwendolen’s affections, for she strongly desires to marry someone with the confidence-inspiring name of Ernest. Unbeknownst to Jack, however, Algernon also poses as Ernest to woo the heart of Jack’s ward Cecily Cardew. Complications arise when all four converge at Jack’s country home on the same weekend. Will Jack and Algernon discover the importance of being earnest while answering to the name of Ernest?

Cottage Theatre's production of The Importance of Being Earnest is directed and designed by Alan Beck, with costumes by Rhonda Turnquist, and lighting by Amanda Ferguson. The  cast features Jennifer Appleby, Josh Carlton, Steve Mandell, Elizabeth Peterson, James Scoggins, Karen Snyder, Nicole Trobaugh, and Kory Weimer.

The Importance of Being Earnest runs for eleven performances at Cottage Theatre from June 9 — 25. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 8:00 pm, and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 pm.

Tickets are available online at www.cottagetheatre.org, by phone at 541-942-8001, or in person at the Cottage Theatre Box Office, 700 Village Drive, Cottage Grove. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for youth (ages 6 - 18). Box Office hours are Wednesday through Friday, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, and one hour before performances.
